Where to watch Dark City (US)
A city where it's always night
A man wakes up in a bathtub with no memory, a dead woman in the next room, and pale men in long coats hunting him. Dark City is set in a city where the sun never rises and the clocks all stop at midnight. It came out in 1998, a year before The Matrix, and the two share some striking ideas. The Matrix even shot on some of the same Sydney sets.
Watch the director's cut
The studio added an opening voiceover that gives away the big mystery in the first minute. The director's cut removes it, and that's the version to watch. The production design looks like a nightmare version of a 1940s noir, and it still holds up beautifully. Roger Ebert called it the best film of its year, and it deserves a much bigger reputation.
