Where to watch Cherry 2000 (US)
He wants his robot wife back
It opens with a man and his robot wife on a soapy kitchen floor until she shorts out and dies. He won't take a newer model, so he hires a tracker to lead him into the lawless wastelands where an identical body is sitting in a warehouse. That tracker is Melanie Griffith, red hair and rocket launcher, right before Working Girl made her a star, and she walks off with the whole film.
A sharp idea buried under the junkyard
Under the rubble there is a pointed idea: a dig at men who would rather have a partner they can program. With AI companions and lifelike robots no longer sounding like science fiction, it feels a lot less ridiculous now than it did back then. The studio had no idea what it had, shelved it for years and dumped it on VHS. It has aged into a gloriously oddball relic that still holds up.
