Where to watch Odd Thomas (US)
No money left to promote it
Odd Thomas cost twenty-seven million dollars, then a lawsuit between the filmmakers and their financiers tied up the money meant to promote it. The American release shrank to a handful of theaters with no advertising, and most people found it on a DVD shelf. Anton Yelchin is Odd, a short-order cook in a California desert town who can see the dead. He also sees bodachs, shadowy creatures that gather wherever something terrible is about to happen. One morning a strange man walks into the diner with a crowd of them trailing behind him, and Odd has to work out what's coming before it arrives.
Funny, warm and a little bit scary
Yelchin talks fast and keeps things light, which makes the darker turns hit harder. Willem Dafoe is the police chief who believes him, and their scenes have an easy warmth. It's one of the most charming horror movies of its decade, and it got buried. If you like your ghost stories with a sense of humor and some real heart, this one's an easy recommendation.
